From June 30th to July 4th, 2025, the Kuala Lumpur Alternative Dispute Resolution Week 2025 (KL ADR Week 2025) took place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, under the theme “Inclusive and Sustainable Dispute Resolution: Responsible ADR for a Stronger ASEAN.” The event was co-organized by Legal Plus and L2 i-CON International, in collaboration with partners from Malaysia and around the world. Representing the Vietnam Mediation Center (VMC), Mr. Phan Trong Dat – Acting Director of VMC – attended and delivered a presentation at the event.
The KL ADR Week 2025 highlighted the essential role of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) methods not only in promoting legal and commercial harmony but also in advancing ethical, inclusive, and sustainable solutions for the region. The series of events brought together ADR experts, policymakers and business leaders to discuss how inclusive and sustainable ADR practices can contribute to the development of both enterprises and society at large.
As part of KL ADR Week 2025, on the afternoon of June 30th, 2025, Mr. Phan Trong Dat – Acting Director of the Vietnam Mediation Center (VMC) – represented VMC and delivered a presentation on the topic “Mediating Construction Disputes in Vietnam: Practical Insights and Lessons for ASEAN” to nearly 200 participants, including lawyers, businesses, and experts in the legal and construction sectors from across ASEAN and various other countries.

In his presentation, Mr. Phan Trong Dat provided an overview of the current landscape of commercial mediation in Vietnam and the dispute resolution activities conducted by VMC. Particularly, his insights into statistics on construction-related disputes at both VMC and the Vietnam International Arbitration Center (VIAC) drew significant interest from attendees. Regarding the nature of disputing parties, beyond domestic cases, VMC has been supporting dispute resolution for businesses from over 10 countries and territories, including ASEAN members such as Singapore and Thailand. This highlights VMC’s growing reputation, credibility, and capability in handling international disputes.
The presentation also introduced the legal framework governing commercial mediation in Vietnam, which provides a solid legal foundation for the parties and ensures compatibility with international standards in mediation. Additionally, practical aspects of the mediation process, such as the nature of the disputing parties, the commencement of mediation, session organization, and the roles of Vietnamese and foreign lawyers in specific cases, helped participants at KL ADR Week 2025 gain deeper insights into how commercial mediation is conducted at VMC in particular, and in Vietnam in general.
